Washington, D.C.

The Global Innovations in Democracy: Parliamentary Exchange (GID), led by the Institute for Democratic Engagement and Accountability (IDEA) at The Ohio State University, and the Center for Democracy Innovation (now part of the National Civic League), was established in 2022 to provide a global forum for legislators to discuss the most innovative methods and tools for gathering input, overcoming divisions, building trust, and gaining public support for public policy.

You can find a report on takeaways from GID 2024 here.

This year’s GID exchange will bring together national legislators from nearly a dozen delegations, representing Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States and others, to learn from one another and jointly explore new trends, tools, and innovations in this work. After one day of workshops and panels to be held at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, we will then move to the U.S. Capitol for a more formal parliamentary exchange between parliamentarians from around the world and U.S, with all others observing.

History of the GID

In November 2022, one week after the US Elections, the first GID Exchange was held in Washington, DC. Parliamentary delegations from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom joined Members of the US House of Representatives for two days of discussions.

The first forum achieved three main goals:

● Created an off-the-record space for legislator-to-legislator dialogue regarding best practices for engaging constituents.

● Connected legislators to innovative practitioners and scholars in the democracy strengthening community.

● Introduced U.S. Members of Congress to participatory reforms that other advanced democracies have incorporated into their legislative processes.
